No More Updates for the Foreseeable Future

Filed under: updater, wdtv — Elmar Weber @ 18:19

As most people probably noticed by now, there haven’t been any updates in a long time. The scraping of the information from the Apple Trailer page is not a simple thing anymore and it was getting too cumbersome to keep ahead with the updater.

Since I upgrade to a WDTV Live I also have Youtube and with the correct channels I have the same benefit as with Apple Trailers (although with a little lower quality).

So there will be no further updates to the updater itself and only bug fixes to the core filesystem program. It can be the basis for any kind of media system for the WDTV, including a new appletrailerfs like system. The source code is available at SourceForge.net and anyone interested can use it to continue.

It has been a fun project, I learned a lot about C programming and programming for embedded systems, but – as written above – the benefits do no longer outweigh the work.

Database Update Fixed

For a few days the trailers where not up to date due to Apple no longer updating their database files at the old URL. The appletrailerfs updater now uses the new URLs and you should get the newest movie trailers again.

Trailer URLs fixed

Apple moved the trailers to a new domain and the updater was still verifying the URLs against the old one, so the last two days no movies showed up. The problem is fixed and the next update will pull in the full list again.

appletrailerfs 0.3.3.1-beta Released

Filed under: Uncategorized — Elmar Weber @ 22:00

A new version of appletrailerfs has been released. appletrailerfs brings you the Apple movie trailers to the Western Digital TV HD and your PC.

This release fixes some bugs:

  • Most importantly it changed the database URLs, so you should definitely update because otherwise you won’t be getting any updates. I’m sorry for the inconvenience but I was forced change the update URLs and put the files behind a script to block excess downloads. Someone, either by accident or ill intent pulled the file every second and produced over 15GB of traffic in a few hours before I took the files offline.
  • fixed: –hide-*-trailers parameters did not work anymore
  • added: build flag for OpenTViX platform to set default update url and other parameters
  • fixed: unsupported parameter –sort-by-update is marked as deprecated
  • fixed: several bugs in the updater
  • fixed: cleaned up source code in the updater
  • added: new database for desktop systems that has only the mov and jpg files

An update is required for users because the old update URLs are invalid and thus you won’t get any more trailer updates until you upgrade the version.

Note: If you are using the application on the WDTV and made changes to the appletrailerfs.conf.txt file you should double check after this update that in case the parameter –sort-by-update is still there the line should be removed because in future versions it may produce an error.

The WDTV application image is available at http://sourceforge.net/projects/appletrailerfs/files/Western%20Digital%20TV%20HD%20Images/appletrailerfs-0.3.3.1-beta-wdtv/appletrailerfs-0.3.3.1-beta-wdtv.zip/download.
As always, to use this you need ext3-boot or WDLXTV and you must copy all files from the downloaded ZIP file to your USB boot stick.
If you don’t want to use the GUI modifications just delete the file appletrailerfs.app.event from your USB boot stick.

All project files can be downloaded from http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=259619.

For future developments and time frames have a look at the roadmap.

Database Updated Paused

Filed under: Uncategorized — Elmar Weber @ 22:40

The database update is currently paused and not available, i.e. you may get errors that the database download failed. You will still be able to use appletrailerfs but you won’t get new trailers. I’m restructuring the database update URLs and will release a fixed version tomorrow.

I was forced to move the database files from the server because from somewhere the file was requested every few seconds – either by ill intent or accident – and produced about 15 GB of traffic in a few hours which would have used my quota in a few days. As soon as i have time I will add GZIP compression to the download and also make sure that IP’s that request the file too fast are blocked for some time. I’ll keep you posted.

appletrailerfs 0.3.3-beta Released

Filed under: Uncategorized — Elmar Weber @ 11:56

A new version of appletrailerfs has been released. appletrailerfs brings you the Apple movie trailers to the Western Digital TV HD and your PC.

This release fixes several bugs and introduces some new features (see screenshots below):

  • added: complete OSD mod for the WDTV; all folders are now skinned and all appletrailerfs OSD pages are consistent
  • fixed: some movie trailers were not parsed, about 30 new movies are available now
  • updated moviejukebox (fixes problems with missing images and movie descriptions)
  • files > 2 GB are supported
  • several minor fixes in the database updater
  • database support for OpenTViX platform
  • new database format (see below)

The new database format is no longer specific for appletrailerfs but instead entries can be specified freely allowing anyone to create listings of remote files. For details take a look at the supplied JSON database file or the documentation.

An update is recommended for every user because the old update process will only be in place for a few weeks and then it will be discontinued.

The WDTV application image is available at http://sourceforge.net/projects/appletrailerfs/files/Western%20Digital%20TV%20HD%20Images/appletrailerfs-0.3.3-beta-wdtv/appletrailerfs-0.3.3-beta-wdtv.zip/download.

There was a glitch with the database update yesterday. If you got an empty list of movies please just restart the device or appletrailerfs and everything should work again.

Update on Defect Update Process

There seems to be a problem with the Apple trailer website. Users of QuickTime have the same problems of not being able to play back a trailer. So even with the restored database you won’t be able to play the listed trailers until apple has fixed their website. I’ll keep you posted.

*UPDATE 1*

It seems to be related to the user agent. I fixed the updater, but the problem will persists in appletrailerfs itself, i.e. you won’t be able to play back the trailers. I’ll wait until tomorrow to see if Apple has fixed this, otherwise I will post a new version of appletrailerfs that fixes the problem on the client side.

*UPDATE 2*

Bugfix available, for download and more details read the blog post.
