appletrailerfs 0.2.0-beta released

A new version of appletrailerfs has been released. appletrailerfs brings you the Apple movie trailers into your filesystem and to your Western Digital TV HD.

Version 0.2.0 contains some new features and bug fixes, namely.

  • support for all JSON streams from Apple Trailers
    • more trailers
    • better sorted, e.g. by last update and genres
  • added movie posters to file system
  • fixed issue on WDTV when media database is disabled
  • option to redirect log output to log file
  • integrated WDTV scripts into build process
  • generated source code documentation

Most noticeable will be the new folder structure and the movie thumbnails. The new folder structure allows you to browse the trailers by updates, i.e. the newest trailer is shown first, or to browse the movie trailers by genre or just view movies were HD trailers are available. With the new movie poster support for each movie a thumbnail of the movie poster is shown in the movie’s directory. See the screenshots at the end of the post to get an impression of the new features.
The WDTV application image is available at

All project files can be downloaded from

SourceForge project page:

  1. I can install it and run it but I cannot play the trailers. It always give me this error:

“Unable to play the selected file. Please refer to the user manual for how to change the file to a supported format.”

    What’s the problem?!?

  2. Do you have a working network connection and can your WDTV access the internet?
If yes, then the problem is something else. In that case the output of the log file /apps/appletrailerfs/var/log/appletrailerfs.log would be helpful to find the reason why the trailers aren’t playing.

  4. Not sure if it’s just me, but I installed this a couple of weeks ago and it works as described, but to this day I’m still showing the same exact Apple trailers as two weeks ago. When I go to the Apple Trailers site there are lot more new updated trailers that does not show on my WDTV.

Is there a large lag time, or is there something wrong?

    Thanks for all your work.

  5. An auto update feature is still missing but will be added soon.
